Feb. 28, 2010 PTQ Puerto Rico event review from David Soule. (Wed, 03 Mar 2010 15:59:00 -0800)

Before you all get to read David's event review, I want to thank all the players who came out to play.  I was pleasantly surprised with the turnout of 37, esp. with the chaos created with the Tsunami warning.  I know that the Tsunami prevented a few players from competing for various reasons.  I knew of a few players flying in from outer islands and others who requested off from work to attend.  I try to never move big events because of this and I am sorry that I could not move the event.

Special thanks to Jeff Lee for judging and running such a smooth event.  I must say that the Wizards solid black judge's shirt looks very smooth on you.  Keith and I have much appreciation for all your hard work and effort.

Lastly, I have some housekeeping to do.  Jeff likes to post prize forecasts up front.  I like to figure out prizes, once I see standings to make sure that all players with the same record get something.  There were 3 players that achieved 3 wins and did not receive prizes,  Andrew Tyler, Scott Lopez and Mike Ching.  Please see or contact me and I will have something for you.  Thank you very much again for coming out to play.  :)  Paula

Here is a review of the event by David Soule:

The Magic the Gathering Pro Tour Qualifier on Sunday February 28th had a good turnout.  There were a total of 37 players attending.  Looking through the decklists, diversity was the name of the game.  There were only a few archetypes that multiple people ran. Things ranged from many different combo-oriented decks to disruptive agressive decks to some special home brewed decks.  It took six rounds of play to narrow it down to the top 8.

The top 8 standings were:
1) Sean Pottenger
2) Alex Ahia
3) Jason Galut
4) Colin Hong
5) Dominic Roos
6) Dane Young
7) Kristopher Lohman
8) Shawn Kimura
In the quarterfinals Dominic beat out Colin Hong with the combo-stopping Chalice of the Void.  Dane defeated Jason in a grueling 3-game match.  Sean Pottenger took a fairly quick match win against the Boros fast Shawn Kimura.  Lastly, Kristopher Lohman and his Bant deck managed to get past Alex Ahia and his elves combo deck.  In the semifinals, Dominic Roos got ousted again in his rematch against Sean Pottenger, all while Dane Young pulled out the match win against Kristopher Lohman in 3 games.  Dane conceded to Sean in the finals, making Sean Pottenger our San Juan Pro Tour Qualifier winner! Congratulations to all players for participating!

Results for Jan. 2, 2010 Standard Cash Tournament. (Mon, 25 Jan 2010 15:18:00 -0800)

Some of the states best players were in the field of sixteen that went for the cash this day after New Years.  Some of the veteran players did a little too much partying on New Year's eve and were admittedly not as prepared as they wanted to be, but came out anyway for a chance at the cash.  I appreciate the turnout and will be sure to add another cash event soon.  In the end, the event was settled with an uninspired draw between friends.  Who took home $100 each.  Thank you very much to all of you who came out to play and special thanks to Jeff Lee for officiating the event.

Top 4 finishers:

1) Dominic Roos $100

2) James Kuwata $100

3) Daniel Andrews $25

4) Colin Hong  $25

FYI to make your lives easier here is the EDH banned list. (Fri, 27 Nov 2009 22:13:40 -0800)

The following is a list of cards which, in addition to the regular Vintage banned list (way below), are banned in EDH. Whenever this list changes, I'll post a note about it to this thread, noting and explaining the changes, and notifying anyone who is subscribed to the thread.

  • Balance
  • Worldgorger Dragon
  • Biorhythm
  • Sway of the Stars
  • Upheaval
  • Panoptic Mirror
  • Ancestral Recall
  • Black Lotus
  • Mox Ruby, Jet, Sapphire, Pearl, Emerald
  • Time Walk
  • Library of Alexandria
  • Yawgmoth's Bargain
  • Coalition Victory
  • Kokusho, the Evening Star
  • Recurrning Nightmare
  • Limited Resources
  • Protean Hulk
  • Karakas
  • Riftsweeper (Unbanned as of September 9th, 2009)
  • Grindstone
  • Lion's Eye Diamond
  • Time Vault
  • Metalworker (Added March 20th, 2009)
  • Tinker (Added March 20th, 2009)
  • Gifts Ungiven (Added June 20th, 2009)
  • Fastbond (Added June 20th, 2009)
Additionally, the following cards may not be used as a General:
  • Braids, Cabal Minion
Of course, EDH is a casual format so each group may use house rules or modifications of this list... but a fair amount of thought and experience goes into maintaining this list, so new groups are advised start here, and it's what you can expect if you travel to a new group.

EDH bannings are made on a case-by-case basis, usually based one of three principles:

#1: A card's power level in multiplayer EDH is signficantly in excess of both it's mana cost AND power level in other formats (due to different rules or game sizes). [Examples include Panoptic Mirror and Biorythm]
#2: A card's dollar cost is prohibitive for most players and the card usually detracts from the playing experience of everyone else in the game [The Power 8]
#3: A card or class of cards can not be consistantly interpreted by all players [Silver bordered cards]

More often than not, principle #1 (EDHBP1) boils down to a "Power:Answer-availibility" ratio. This is a spectrum, from easily dealt with by cards that are easily available, to cards which require one of a handful of cards to answer and require that they are available immediately:

A card which can be answered by many other cards, in the majority of colours, can be very powerful without causing problems. Examples include anything which can be dealt with via sorcery creature removal... many cards of this type are played by almost any deck. Cards which can only be answered by one or two colours, or a handful of cards in any given deck, are magnified by the highlander nature of EDH and must be kept under tighter control. Examples include spells which must be countered or proactively prevented from being played via Meddling Mage/Voidstone Gargoyle/Jester's Cap (Coalition Victory/Biorythm) or dealt with shortly via relatively rare cards (Panoptic Mirror) lest they win the game suddenly. An opponent's ability to have such an answer available is severely restricted by the rules of EDH, so the rules must also regulate the existance of such threats.

NB: neither ubiquity among decks (Mind's Eye, for example), nor being irritating to some players (e.g.: Sensei's Divining Top), are held by the current rules body to be sufficient grounds for a card to be banned. Both are relevant to the discussion, but a card must frequently cause actual problems (substantial restriction on deck or game variety) for its ubiquity to be relevant. What constitutes "irritating" varies too much between players to act upon... one man's fun is another man's fury, so again the card must be causing problems for most players to be actionable.

On that note, community input and sentiment are heavily considered, but unanimity among the player base is not required for us to ban a card... there will always be people who disagree with any banning (or lack thereof).

Gavin Duggan
EDH Rules Committee
